This is the last posted update...

VECTREX 3-D COLLECTION AUCTION UPDATE 08/01/95 - FINAL DAY TO BID!
----------------------------------------------
I had really hoped I wouldn't need to sell these, but I really need the
money. So, here they are...

I've seen these for sale a total of three times over the last 4 years,
and I was lucky enough to get one of them. If you have been looking for
these, this is your chance.

I will accept package bids. If the bid for all items is more than the
total of the three sold individually, you get it all.

Send all offers via email to ribbit@netcom.com. Let me know if you
don't want your real name used and you can have a "handle".
It must be a "cool" handle. :-)

I'll post an update once daily to rec.games.vectrex, and email all
bidders updates as bids come in.

Rules:

1) Auction ends Aug. 1, 1995 11:00EST.
2) I pay shipping.
3) Minimum bid increase is $5.00 on all items.

VECTREX 3-D GLASSES
-------------------
Complete with box and all inserts, including the boxed Minestorm 3-D
game, color wheel, catalogs, instructions. The box is beautiful, it's
still shiny as if it was just pulled from the factory case. I seriously
doubt there is a better looking set in existance. The goggles work.
The only problem (and I suspect most of the goggles are this way - my
other pair is like this) - the original foam that goes on the forehead
part has deteriorated, it's all dry and crumbly. I carefully removed
the foam and it's still in one piece in a baggie, if you really want
it.

Current bid: $380.00 "Mr. Lizard"

VECTREX 3-D CRAZY COASTER
-------------------------
Complete with box and all inserts, including color wheel. Box is still
shiny and new looking. Box has a hang tab attached to the back. Box
has a mark where someone magic markered over a price tag (now removed).

Current bid: $90.00 "apple"

VECTREX 3-D NARROW ESCAPE
-------------------------
Complete with box and all inserts, including color wheel. Box is still
shiny and new looking, but has rips in places from something (price
tags?). Each rip is about 1" square, there is one on the front and
one in each of the corners on the back.

Current bid: $90.00 "apple"

Thanks for looking, and good luck.

Tony

Hi all,
I just picked up a Vectrex a week or so ago, and I'm looking for some
carts. I have tons of stuff to trade, or can buy if they aren't too
unreasonable. I have sealed 2600 stuff, Odyssey 2, Arcadia, and some
boxed INTV stuff too. I would be willing to trade a bunch of different
things for carts.

Oh yeah, where can I get hold of one of those "multicarts" at?? I looked
in the FAQ, but I couldn't find much on it. Thanx!!!!

I recently saved my Vectrex and cartridges form my childhood home. I
have 3-D Crazy COaster w/ box or color wheel if anyone wants to make an
offer. I'm interested also in Blitz if anyone has one. I also have
Scramble, Spike, Star Trek, Web Wars and that racing game.

I could shoot myself for losing the 3D goggles and light pen animation
setup.

If anyone knows of an outlet to still buy Vectrex games, please let me
know.

For any of you who are missing your game overlays, you can use those clear
poly 3 ring binders for replacements. They're easy to cut to size, and
just about the right thickness, although some seem just a little too
thick. they come in various clear colors, and Avery makes one called
"Clear Trends Binder" that has diagonal scoring one-sixteenth of an inch
apart that creates a mild diffraction effect when playing the games. It's
a little too thick to fit on my machines, but I've made adjustments to
accomodate it. None of these solutions have the original artwork on them
however, but someone skilled w/graphics programs and screen printing
techniques can reproduce a good facimile. I'm working on that myself. If
anyone out there has any other ideas, E-mail me or post it here. See ya!

BRAND NEW joystick movements for the VECTREX game controller are now for
sale!!

What does this mean you say?

This means you can fix your joystick yourself!!

Just take your old movement out (only six solder connections and 4
screws) and pop in the new one.

These are brand new, EXACT replacements.

How much?

$20 plus shipping and handling (usually $3 within the continental U.S.).

some of you people have dealt with me before. so you know this is no rip-off.

Well, this weekend while perusing a flea market I stumbled across a
Vectrex wearing the Milton Bradley colors!! Came with Scramble, Spike,
and of course Minestorm. There is a pile of extra overlays, but no
games:-{. It is missing the Scramble overlay, but I have an extra Flipper
Pinball, Berzerk, and Fortresss of Narzod ones if I ever find the games!
On top of all this I paid $17!!!!! Just wanted to gloat.......

From what I was told, it was designed as experimental software that would
let you connect two Vectrex systems together and share data. One cart
plugs into one system and the other plugs into a second BUT there was
also hardware involved between the two carts which renders "dualvec1" &
"dualvec2" useless. I guess the idea was to be able to play two-player
games on two different systems much the same way as the Gameboy, Game
Gear, and Lynx do now. The software was never sophisticated enough to
much more than transmit a byte or two for experimentation, but it would
have been cool if they finished it...

In a previous article, anderse@academy.bastad.se (Anders Erlandsson) says:

>I have seen the auctions here that with the 3d games there is a "color
>wheel"?? What is this? Is it the sheet to cover the screen or is it a
>new spinning color wheel for every game to replace the one inside the
>goggles?

The color wheel is the disc that spins inside the goggles, thus producing
the "3-D" or color separation effect. It's a plastic disc about 4" in
diameter (transparent) with sectors of different colors - red, blue, etc.

There are two different color wheels for the Vectrex. The first is the
wheel for "Minestorm", which has a unique color pattern. The second wheel
can be used with the remaining 3-D games: Narrow Escape, Crazy Coaster, and
I think Pole Position 3-D would have used it too (if it were released).
The color distribution on this wheel is different than the first (3-D
Minestorm).

Hope this helps,

Barry

OK, I know this stuff is probably in the FAQ, but since there isn't much
traffic on the group right now, I thought maybe someone would like to take
a stab at it.

I have been the proud owner of a Vectrex and a ton of games, including the
light pen and 3D viewer, since I was a kid (thanks, Dad!). Having been a
good kid, I took care of this stuff, and years later it all works fine,
although my brother has long since cracked and destroyed all the game
screens.

This is the dilemma: I pulled it out of the closet to show a friend on
Saturday, turning it on for the first time in over a year. The vector
mapping (or whatever) is all screwy! It draws the screen fine in the
middle, but it starts to skew around the edges, especially top and bottom
(to visualize, think of the Minestorm ship at the beginning of the level
starting out fine, and as it moves off the bottom of the screen, breaking
up into a strange boxy shape - even better example: the startup screen
with the two boxes is skewed, the outside box is sort of slanted on the
top and bottom).

What's up? Is the vector lazer or whatever biting the dust, or is it a
fixable thing? I can still play the games OK (and amazingly enough, the
most playable games are the 3D ones), but it is annoying around the edges
and is obviously going to be a problem if a) I ever try to sell it, or b)
if I want my kid to be able to play it ten years from now.

Any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Brad

I have had a Vectrex since 1983, and all this time, I have never seen a
game cartridge or accessory anywhere! I just discovered this newsgroup,
and obviously most of you have seen 'em, so I would like to know the best
places to find carts locally ( other than here). And if any of you have
some for sale, I will buy them, it's been a long 12 years!

Ouch! <Grin> To be honest, tho, I've not seen much either since the
early 80's (when I found a few cartridges at a local bargain store for
my own Vectrex).

>I just discovered this newsgroup, and obviously most of you have seen

Since you're on AOL, your definition of "locally" is hard to guess. :-)
But there's at least one person still making and selling "multicarts"
actively in the newsgroup, I believe.

A "multicart" is a cartridge which contains all (or most) known Vectrex
games plus either a menu system or a series of DIP switches with which to
select the game to play. The code for most of the games has generously
been released for use by Vectrex enthusiasts in this manner.

I think the FAQ (which should be posted soon?) details this -- look here,
and read it when it comes out!

>And if any of you have some for sale, I will buy them, it's been a long
>12 years!

I think you'll find stuff for sale here from time to time.

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on perspective <g>), sales tend
to become bidding wars (or are formally presented as such), and prices
for items (like consoles) can go surprisingly high.

Anders -

I wrote those programs years ago at Western Tech to demonstrate the
possibility of
making a game that would play on two systems (Like you can do with
gameboy now...)

This program did nothing more than display the buttons from one
Vectrex on the other's
display (and vice-versa).

I have no idea how these programs made it into the archive - I only
showed this software
to a few people... You may safely discard them. It communicates
between the system
by using PB6 on the cartridge. If you really want to see it work,
you must connect PB6
and GND between the two systems, then run DUALVEC on 1 system and
DUALVEC2 on the other.

I would like to find out some info regarding the history of the Vectrex.
For instance, the names of all the GCE authorized service centers, the
names of the various OEM manufacturers for the machine components, the
addresses of GCE, Smith Engineering, and Western Technologies, and the
names of major product distributors and retailers that sold Vectrex.

I'm also interested in finding copies of the merchandise catalogs (Sears,
J.C. Penney, etc.) the featured vectrex in '82 - '84.

And besides the FTP site, does anyone know where to get good
pictures/scans of original packaging, promo materials etc? I hope there's
more out there!

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

ThanX,
L. Saylor

Hi everyone, I just found this newsgroup and a tear came to my eye. I
thought I was the only person on the planet who still thought Vectrex was
a great system. I have a few questions, however. I read the last 40 or
so messages, and saw references to the web site and the ftp site. Where
are these? I NEED to know! I've reached that point in life where I have
more dollars than sense, and collecting Vectrex stuff would be an
incredibly cool way to remedy that situation. I have to get this stuff
now, as I didn't buy my Vectrex until it was discontinued and Toys R Us
sold them out for $50. (A princely sum for a 15 year old) Now, my heart
breaks at the memory of stacks and stacks of Star Trek cartridges lying in
Toys R Us for months afterwards, discounted to $0.50. To think I didn't
get more, because I already had one.............
Thanks for the info, and for making me feel (more) normal.....

Then run, don't walk, in the general direction of skelly@xnet.com. He's
got a multicart for $70 (I think), which is an excellent start if you've
got a console and too much ca$h.

At the time we wrote these games, most of the Atari games were using 2K
ROMS. 4K ROMS were still fairly expensive. The 8K ROMS were only used
in later games after prices dropped enough to justify them...

Well, I would offer $100, but I could also come up with some pretty cool
stuff to trade... Joe Montana Rookie card, (heck maybe I'd even part
with the entire 1981 Topps Football set, all EX/MINT.) Anyway, I'm told
that Joe's card is $225 - $250 and now that he is retired and due to
enter the Hall of Fame, it should start its big climb!

Of course if you have no interest in this, that means nothing. I have
Magic Memorabilia, other Sports items, a 286 laptop, Godzilla, etc.,
etc...

How about letting me know if you are at all interested in some type of
trade, and if so, what kind of interests you have. I might have that
certain something you have been looking for.

I would also appreciate the opportunity to beat the best offer. Would
you let me know what it is?

Best of luck!

A little bit about the history of Vectrex can be found in the book
Phoenix: The Fall & Rise of Home Videogames by Leonard Herman. This book
is the only book available that explores the complete history of home
videogaming. This 310 page book begins with a brief history of the
computer and then leads into the first games played on mainframe computers
and then Odyssey and Pong. The book then takes the reader on a year by
year journey of all the systems and events through the year 1993 and the
onset of videogame ratings. The book also includes chapters on multimedia
and Virtual Reality.

The book has been reviewed and recommended by EGM2 (8/94), EGM (9/94),
Electronic Games (2/95), Video (3/95), Flux (Spring 1995 #4) and Next
Generation (7/95). The book has also been recommended by a multitude of
fanzines such as SNES Gaming; Digital Press; The 2600 Connection; V; Slap
Dash; Game Force; The Laser; Random Access; The Good, The Bad, & The
8-Bit; Matrix; Uproar; Atari Explorer Online; and Game Zero.

Phoenix costs $19.99 and can be special ordered from most smaller
bookstores and Borders (ISBN 0-9643848-8-4) or ordered directly from the
publisher:
Rolenta Press
PO Box 3814
Union, NJ 07083-1891

The book will be sent Book Rate. For an additional $2.50 the book will be
sent by 2-day priority mail. If you order directly from the publisher you
will also automatically receive an addendum chapter featuring 1994 as soon
as it is completed. Please write if you have any questions:

RAND NEW joystick movements for the VECTREX game controller are now for

What does this mean you say?

This means you can fix your joystick yourself!!

Just take your old movement out (only six solder connections and 4
screws) and pop in the new one.

These are brand new, EXACT replacements.

How much?

$20 plus shipping and handling (usually $3 within the continental U.S.).

some of you people have dealt with me before. so you know this is no rip-off.

I just sold the complete Vectrex set with 3-d imager and full cart
library for $1,000 to a buyer who sent me the full amount at once via
Western Union! It was an offer I couldn't refuse!!

Thanks to all the people who bid on it and I'm sorry I only had the one
set to sell; however I may offer other video game items from my
collection in the near future if I find myself strapped for cash again.

Thanks Very Much!!!

I just have to, HAVE TO, say this: Whoever the guy was who bought this system
is a bloody, useless MORON. I mean, come on, its a fun toy and all, but christ,
it's JUST a video game system. Sheesh, you could have bought a vectrex +
multicart, and had enough money to buy a pair of I-glasses still! That would
have much you MUCH more than 2 old 3-d games. l8r...

Yeh, I'd regret not having more to sell if I could get $1K for them.

The simple fact of the matter is that the system that was sold was
GROSSLY under-market. That setup if split up and sold via net.auction
would probably bring in about $3K. A bargain at *twice* the sale
price of $1K (I had a bid of $800 myself).

I think that you have convinced many of us that you are a moron.
But I think that of those many, they wouldn't have counted to three yet.

Summary: vectrex
Keywords: vectrex

concerning the 'person' who spent 1,ooo bucks on the vectrex setup.

as someone has already pointed out, the idea of spending such money on a
fun (don't get me wrong) but extremely outdated piece (or pieces)
of videogaming equipment is rather silly. the 3d imager and the light
pen are the key colectables here (vectrex units aren't too hard to come
by, atleast on the net, and sean kelly's multicart is a great deal. you
can go to the trouble and reproduce the overlays). the thing is that no
matter how rare or collectable the 3d imager is, its still 'outdated' and
'extinct' technology and considering there are only 3 games...

sure you can say its because the vectrex was and probably always will be
the only 'vector' home game system...

i've come to only one conclusion. the guy who bought this setup must
have money. he could be anybody, but i'll betcha' he makes atleast 6-7
figures.

just as a comparison, a couple of months ago i stopped at this little
antique mall (one of dozens) on the side of the highway. all antique
malls look and smell alike after awhile (same goes for thrift stores
and flea markets). anyway as i was casually browzing on 2nd floor amongst
the overpriced 'junk' (one man's trash is anothers treasure. at antique
malls they seem to think everything that is over 10 years old is worth
its weight in gold) i happend upon this really cool piece of underwater
history. it was one of those castiron seadiving helmets (you know from
20,000 leagues unders the sea)...an original. actually there wasn't much
to it...kind of like the 3d imager (you kind of just stick it over your
head). i was thinking "this would be cool to own, i don't know what the hell i would do with it, but it would be
cool." then i looked at the price tag............$1000. i thought to
myself "no one's going to buy this unless they're rich, i mean you don't
exactly collect these things at this price unless you are rich." were
talking about just your ordinary antique mall in smallville mid-america not
some big upscale new york nik nak shop where all the 'celebrites' shop.

just thought i'd offer a little food for thought.

actually as mr. woodcock pointed out, it wasn't all that bad of a deal
(auctioned separately it would have cost a lot more).

the bottom line is-- the guy with the biggest wallet.... (and it helps to
have the balls and a little ignorance).

Well, it seems from the other threads in this post that Vectrex Systems are expensive and rare.
But I thought I had seen them in the past for much less. Bottom line is this:
I'd really like to acquire one. I'd also like some of the carts for it. Specifically Rip-Off.
If anyone knows a little about these (and doesn't mind educating an admitted newbie) I'd appreciate
some info. I remember seeing one in a closeout store years and years ago (like back when the
Atari 2600 was the hottest thing going). As I recall, it had it's own display. Is that correct?
Are they reliable (unlike my Atari Star Wars standup)? How much would I have to pay for one?
What's the average price for the carts? Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Please respond to: hagemann@persoft.com or
		     hagemann@earth.execpc.com

Thanks in advance for any replies.

1. Kill all ships (right?)
2. go out exit without force field looking things....then die!!!
3. go through force field looking things......instant death!!!
4. run over the growing thing in the middle.....didn't leave a scrach and
   death for me again!!!

Do the other buttons do anything?

Thanks in advance,

Here is a guy that has no concept of market value.
He has a picture that isn't worth the paper it's printed on,
and he is upset that he didn't get a undervalued Vectrex, for practically
nothing.

BTW, I would wager you voted NDP election time didn't you,
and while you are at UofT, why don't you take a first year Business
course or Economics course.

If you are serious about aquiring one of these, I suggest you:

a: Watch the auctions, here and in rec.games.video.classic. There is
currently one in the "Huge Auction" being held by Jeff Cates (no
need to thank me for the advertisement Jeff 8-) ). Last I saw it
was going for like $80.00. Games typically run $10.00 - $50.00.

b: Send e-mail to JerryG (Jerry Greiner) at jerryg@hevanet.com
requesting his e-mail catalog. They are somewhat rare and pricey,
though not so much so as recent post would lead you to believe.
Most of the value in the one you've been reading about was in
the 3-D imager and light pen. Hope this helps.

You can stop right there. The word "antique" means they've already found
it at a thrift store or garage sale for an outrageously low price and
thoughtfully ask double the price that a sane person would pay, JUST FOR
YOU, because you're SPECIAL! :)

Their prices are also so high that while they may not often sell anything,
when they do it keeps them afloat.

Now this flea market stall I know of where they have $15 stickers on one
copy of Empire Strikes Back, two copies of Jedi Arena, and one mystery
cart (Frogger for all I know) stacked next to a Darth Vader phone, *that*'s
what "antique" stores are about.

Two things first:
1)How do you know, have you seen my picture?!?!
2)I didn't even bid for the vectrex!!

Bottom line, I know about market analysis, but when it comes to something like
ehis, I also know about something else: what is a WASTE of CASH, and this, a
was a BIG waste of a lot of it. l8r...

Oh yeah? You want to talk about a big waste of cash, how about people
who collect Star Trek and Star Wars toys? They don't even play with
them, they just leave them in the original packaging! Now there are some
real idiots for you.

At least people who waste their money on Magic The Gathering cards
usually play the game every now and then.

OK, so people who spend away their life saving on psychics and witch
doctors to lift curse, and mediums to contact the dead are all in good
shape, since they perceive the value to be there. We really should not
try to "help" these people, nor "warn" others who may follow, that their
perceived value may be out of line with what is more commonly accepted
as the perceived value?

Conceptually, I think you've missed the point. Consider the flip side:
(each reference to 'you' below is a generic, not specific 'you')

If an individual kidnapped my wife, and the ransom was set at $1,000
then my decision would be to just pay the price, since I perceive my
wife's value to be in excess of $1,000.
(good thing the ransom wasn't $2,000 - I might have to think about it)

However, if YOU were asked to pay the ransom, you might choose not to,
since my wife's perceived value to you is probably quite a bit less
than $1,000.

Does this mean that you think that my wife is JUST a game? 'Sheesh, I
could have bought a vectrex + multicart...' instead of saving her
life! (although I WOULD like to get my hands on those I-glasses :-) )

Anyway, I'm pretty confident that you would have snatched up the
system if it was selling for $100, but if I asked you to fork over
just $100 to free my wife, you'd probably tell me to get lost.

Does this make you a MORON, just because you value a video game higher
than a person? If not, then how can the vectrex buyer be a moron just
because s/he percieved the value of one video game to be higher than
another?
[Editorial OFF]

Perhaps the purchaser has a better understanding of his (her?) value
system than the rest of us do.

cash that could better be spent at bars or on cigarettes?

since you don't know anything about collecting then you
really shouldn't go off and assume it's a "big waste of
money" it costs alot to amass a nice collection. nice
items that can be sold in the future for more than you paid.
items that you can trade for other stuff. a wall full of these
things makes peoples jaws drop...

i suppose we could all spend our money going to overpriced
concerts or the movies or anywhere else that trades an evening
of intangible experiences for money. and the week afterward
you've completely forgotten all about it...

or you could spend $20k on a car that's worth $16k as soon as
you drive it off the lot. that wouldn't be a "big waste of
money" would it?

but where's the thrill of looking and looking for something
that's been off the market for 15 years? the fun of meeting
people with similar interests?

could you ever take $75 worth of clothes and sell them for
$1100. i thought not. your clothes are worth pennies to
garage salers or thrift store employees.

is a painting worth $16 million? maybe not, but people
pay it.

At least the video games are playable and entertaining. And more than a
few game players acknowledge that the classic games by and large are more
"playable" with better "game action" than many of the new glitzy releases.

    1. Kill all ships (right?)
Maybe. Haven't ever done all that well myself, so I'm not sure this is
the correct stratedgy.

Do the other buttons do anything?
One button opeates a shield, which will allow you to bounce off things
that would normally kill you. Another is the drill, which lets you "drill"
through the "force field looking things", as long as you're moving slowly.

    2. go out exit without force field looking things....then die!!!
The one without a shield is the way you came in. When you get to see the
map between screens, keep in mind which exit heads toward the center.
You want to drill through the force field in that direction.

    3. go through force field looking things......instant death!!!
You have to approach the shield very slowly while operating the drill.

My general strategy is to get to the correct shield wall as quickly as
possible, fending off other ships as necessary. When they're gone, or
not bothering you, drill through to the next room.

When you get to the center, you plant a bomb by pulling back on the joystick,
and then try to get out before it goes off. This is tough.

Well, you *can* do that, but the real objective is to get to the center
room, get close to the "core", then pull the joystick down to drop the
time bomb. You better have already cleared a path to an exit, though!

Hi,
I've got a good week to kill and was wondering what a good High score is on
Star Castle. Is there a list of scores for the rgv group? Game hints? It
seems I stay at the 30-35K level, I'll die continuously since the
fireballs blow up the ship if it's close and/or those *** keep hunting me
down. Getting a cheap fix while attempting to repair my dedicated Star
Castle. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Helping a person see a 'commonly accepted' perceived value is just a
tad different from informing them that they are 'bloody useless
moron.'

I can understand someone expressing their opinion that the system sold
for a higher price than he would have expected, but flaming an
individual would certainly be 'commonly accepted' as having no
perceived value. (even though the original flamer believed otherwise)

In this case, it appears that both Andy and the purchaser (whoever it
was that bought the damn thing) succeeded in taking an action that the
other feels has no value. Great, now they're even. Do you like playing
Rip-Off? I do. :-)

POGS ARE EVIL! POGS ARE THE ANTI-PAC!

I only posess seven pogs. One sheet of six that was in with some Happy
Meal grab bags at a thrift store (I wanted something else in the bag),
and another that fell into a ColecoVision set that had a copy of
ColecoVision Experience V1N1.

And sheesh, they've finally come up with a pogs *TV commercial* now,
ferchrissake.

On the other hand, at one pog-selling place in a flea market mall, there
were a dozen REAL MILKCAPS in the window. I ooooooohed over them for a
moment, noting their fully functional and un-devolved pull-tabs and
genuine milk company logos before I wandered off.

Not true. There are tricks. Not cheats, but legitimate strategies that
GREATLY enhance your success in Cosmic Chasm. <Grin>

Hint: Try running at a door with your shields up, and flicker the shield
down very quickly with your finger on the drill button to get the drill
running. That minimizes your exposure to external impacts while allowing
you to pass through doors at nearly full speed.

That's the only hint you get. :-)

Not at all. Just take a direct route in, and make sure you kill off all
opposition before trying to take that route back out again. :-)

Unlike the original arcade version, the Vectrex version of Star Castle lets
you shoot four shots on the screen at once. I wish they'd left it with the
original three -- four is too easy because it lets you penetrate two shield
sections in a single burst.

My own high score is is 504,530, recorded on 12/29/86, but the machine high
score is 629,450 (1/29/87), and my little brother Tim had 92 ships left at
that point (he got bored after he discovered an effective attack pattern
and broke my score, and we watched the ship die over and over and counted).

There are a couple of effective patterns that also will work well in the
original arcade and in Cyclone (an **AWESOME** Star Castle clone for the
Macintosh).

I've not had the interest to try and beat the old scores anymore -- it
takes too dang long! :-)

This may be a BIT off topic, but whereas it concerns videogames that have
vector graphics, it's not too bad. What I wanna know is this: where have
all the vector arcade games gone? It used to be you could walk in an
arcade and see Battlezone, Red Baron, Tempest, Star Trek, Star Wars, and
my favorite that I can't exactly remember the name of, something like
Samurai by, I think, Cinematronics? ANYWAY, where have all the vectors
gone? A good number of these things were made, and I would think their
vector monitors would make them unlikely to be reconverted to new games.
Are there still vending services that have these things? They must be
somewhere....

Well, Star Wars and Tempest are still around with some vendors, probably
being the two most popular vector games. The others are few and far
between. If you have an interest in arcade games, the newsgroup
rec.games.video.arcade.collecting could probably answer any question you
could have - they pride themselves in knowing about rare vector games, etc.

I have a problem with the "Minesweeper" game (the built-in game that does not
require a cartridge). After I pass level 13 or so, the game is prone to
quitting after I pass every level or two thereafter. When the game does
continue, it will skip levels (go from level 13 to level 15, for example).
Anybody know how to work around this bug or otherwise deal with it?

Also, I had a problem with this same game where I could not complete a
particular level (a high level in the 30's or 40's) because not enough mines
opened up at the beginning of the level. I was left with seven mines that
would not open; the game was stuck.

Please post or e-mail me. Any advice would be welcome.

Minestorm has a documented problem in that the internal table of mines
(there's thirteen entries, one for each level) does not have an 'end
game' indicator. So instead of the game ending, the program just grabs
'random' code from beyond the mine table to create fields 14, 15, etc.
Levels skip because of the way the code is interpreted.

Guess the programmer never thought anyone would actually get that far :-).

Hi,
I've only been a Vectrex owner for about 3 months. The system I bought
came with Art Master and AnimAction. No overlays or instructions came
with these. I'm pretty sure the the games orig came with instruction but
are there overlays for these 2 carts? I'm thinking of selling the orig carts
since I have a multi-cart (works great) and need extra $$$. Thanks for
any and all info.

Hey there, just stumbled upon this news group. I had no idea that there
was any sort of group who actually discusses the vectrex!

I have had mine since December 3rd 1984. (I still have the bill) :)

Bought it with Armour Attack. Also bought Berserk, Star Trek,
Hyperchase, and Webwarp. Still have all of the overlays, and
instructions. I still think it's one of the best home arcade systems around.

I remember seeing a light pen and keyboard or something like that that
would allow you to program the system. Was that ever released? I would
sure like to see one of those.

Also, read that there was a version of Star Castle. That was one of my
all time favourite vector games. (Next to Star Wars of course)

Please reply with more info, and a possible value for the system mentioned.

Are the multicarts I read about on this newsgroup still made,
or are they old too?
Are there different ones, and what is on them?
Who makes/made them? Companies or "home-brewers"?
Where can I get them?
Also who sells game carts and other vectrex stuff in general?
Thanks a lot for any answers.

Yes, but aren't some of the weird combinations a serendipitous byproduct
of this? Or are all the special mines (invisible, etc...) a feature in
the preprogrammed waves as well?

I hear stuff about waves with just one special mine, all invisible
seekers, etc... That seems like logical progressions to me.

Asteroids consoles are uncommon but not rare these days. I saw one down
in Florida last year.

It's things like the Cinematronics games that were ported to the Vec that
are now really rare probably due to their unminiaturized CPU-chipless
circuitry being hard to service.

I had the same problem in minefield. It took me years to figure out how
to keep the game from ending after level 13. On my system if you pushed buttons
on the controller during the intermission between levels it would reset. This
only happens after level 13, and if I remember correctly, is most prone every
other level. I used to try to warp right at the end of the level. This too
could cause problems. I never had my console reset after learning this. Just
don't play with ther controller between intermissions and don't warp at the end
of the level. Worked for me this way. I used to get up to level 70 something I
think it was. the last screen has 1 more star than it should. Therefore, after
all mines are distroyed there is still a star showing on the screen. That was
the end of the game as far as I can tell. Anyway, I hope this helps.

HELP ME! After eleven years of faithful service, my Vectrex has finally
bit the big one. A week ago, I took it out of storage, where it had been
for about six months. I turn it on, and everything works great. And then,
all of a sudden, it goes *ping!* and the screen goes blank. YIKES!

So I turned up the brightness control, and I'm getting sort of a spiderweb
starburst type of thing going from a central point in the middle of the
screen. The game STILL plays, the sounds sound fine, it's just the display
that's messed up. Oh yeah, and anytime there are characters (like for the
scoring or whatever) all I get is a set of parallel lines, like a musical
staff.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my Vectrex? Can I fix it myself, or
is it fucked forever? Please e-mail me if you have any possible solutions!
I'm desperate! I have a complete collection of Vectrex stuff, save for
anything with 3-D in its name, and I'd rather not try to hunt down a new
Vectrex. Thanks!

Well, I really didn't want to do this but moving, spcase and $$$
make it neccessary.

Vectrex in good condition with one controller and original
box with a Multicart. $175+shipping.

Hurry this is only for a limited time, it must be gone
before the movers get here or it's going into storage :(
In a couple of hours I will be disconnected from e-mail for a few days
and phones as well, so try to get a hold of me in the next week, the sooner
the better.

As always higher offers will be accepted, and no trade offers on
this except maybe a SNES cart or so as partial trade/deal sweetener.

Sorry I can't tell you excatly what is wrong with your Vectrex but mine
a number of years ago did excatly the same thing. What it turned out to be
was one of the chips had worked it's way loose and needed to be pushed back
into to it's seat. Now that's the easy problem now if the same chip is bad
look for someone who works on systems with integrated ships on it. A GOOD
computer repair person would be great for this. Look for someone who knows
who to use a sodering iron rather than just pull and replace. I don't know
if what ships are still available good luck let me know what happens. I
dread the day that happens again to mine!

         Matti
P.S. before opening the system ground the plug!!!! Remember that is a TV
screen in there and it holds high charges for a while that can hurt and even
kill!

Sorry, my mistake. No Animaction on the multi...it's just something I've
never tried to play. I don't care to much for any games besides RipOff,
Armor Attack, and Star Castle. I only tried the lightpen yesterday. I
bought the Vec because I got tired of waiting to find a nice arcade unit.
Well...did the Anim or Art Masters come with overlays? Thansk for any help.

I am sorry to put commerce on this board, but I am trying to complete my
Vectex collection. I am down to needing the light pen and Melody Master.
I have 3D Crazy Coaster, Web Wars, Star Hawk and Star Trek as bait.
Sorry, no disk for Coaster, but it is the same one as for 3D Narrow Escape
if you have that one.

I am also missing various overlays and instructions and would also be
interested in trading. I do have other carts for other systems to trade
as well. Thx.

By the way, FYI:
I got three carts at a Flea market some time back and they are different
from standard Vectrex fair. They have different lettering , and say
"Vectrex Cassette" instead of "Vectrex Arcade System Cartridge" and were
made in Ireland, as opposed to Hong Kong. The most unusual is a cart
called "Flipper Pinball", which is really just "Spinball". Most likely
these are just oversees variations.

Welcome to the first Vectrific auction! I'm going to be clearing out a
few duplicate and/or unwanted items. Everything is in very good
condition for Vectrex stuff - not mint from the box, but nice and clean.
Any exceptions will be noted.

Some rules and notes:

1) The auction will continue until August 6, 11:59 pm. At that point,
I will call "going once" for all remaining items, and bids will only
be accepted from people who are bidding on an item that they have
previously bid on. Once an item is not receiving any bids on a
"going once" call, I will call "going twice". If that item does not
receive a bid within one day, the item is sold to the last bidder.

2) If an item is inactive for two days, the last bidder may claim the
item by notifying me. Hopefully, everything will be claimed before
    August 6.

3) I will post current high bids via email and usenet at least once
a day. August 2-4 (labor day weekend), I *may* not post any
    updates.

4) Payment will be by Money Order unless I have dealt with you before.
Payment must be received within one week of your winning bid(s).

5) If any trades are offered, they will be assigned a cash value, so
that others may compete against the trade.

6) Shipping will be via UPS, and the charges will be as follows:

    $3.50 for the first cart
      .50 for each additional cart

    $15 for the console

7) I will not use secret, or "code" names.

8) Minimum bid increment is $1.

I have for sale two almost complete vectrex sets.

Set #1: missing the following, 3-d imager box, 3 game boxes, 1 manual, 1
overlay. I WILL be keeping the 3-d imager and light-pen hardware for
myself but the carts are ALL accounted. Other than the few above
mentioned items, this set is COMPLETE. ALL boxes, ALL manuals, ALL
overlays. Everyting in working and good condition.

Set #2: this set has a non-working unit (turns on, hums but no
audio/video, I'm assuming that it can be fixed rather easily, I just don't
have the time), missing all boxes, 3 game carts, 7 manuals, 5 overlays.
This set also does not have the 3-d imager or the pen and none of their
respective cartridges. A great set to get if you want to get most of the
titles.

Please e-mail me with your bids and specify which set you are interested
in: ALL, SET #1, SET #2

item by notifying me.

No MIMEs this time, I know everybody hates them :)

Welcome to the first Vectrific auction! I'm going to be clearing out a
few duplicate and/or unwanted items. Everything is in very good

Any exceptions will be noted.

Hello all! I've had a Vectrex in storage for years now (get it out every
year or so to make sure it works) and now that I'm here on the internet,
I've found this rec.games.vectrex newsgroup!

I have the following for sale to the highest bidder:
----------------------------------------------------------------
* Vectrex Arcade unit, with original box, instructions, manuals,
built in "Minesweeper" game with overlay.

* Scramble w/box, instructions, & overlay

* Spike w/box, instructions (no overlay)

* Star Trek w/box, instructions & overlay

* Berzerk w/box, instructions & overlay

* Hyperchase w/box, instructions & overlay

* Armor Attack w/box, instructions & overlay

* Star Castle w/box, instructions & overlay
-----------------------------------------------------------------

So what is this 'mint-condition' unit w/games worth to you? I'm not
interested in selling just the unit or just the games...it has to go
as a whole package.

It's been rarely used and works great!

here's a good endall statement that applies to just about everyone in this
angry and befuddled collectors group...

Accounting teaches us that the book value of anything out there is valued
only at the price acquired for. On this dude's books, he's got some
pretty archaic hardware valued on his books at 1000 dollars. is it worth
it? That's irrelevant; at best, all he can do is claim this on his tax
return as 1000 dollars on videogames.

Value and worth are two completely different ideas, and contrary to
popular belief, they are not easily interchangeable. And no matter how
good or bad a deal this seems to be, 1000 dollars is a pretty shocking
price for a toy (Although I've heard worse, like buying two or three
systems for christmas, purchasing a tricked out Mountain bike, the Yugo,
etc.)

In the end, all it comes down to is that someone out there felt that
despite the value people put on vectrex systems (Baseline 70 for a system,
250 or so for a multicart, 5-50 bucks for a cart, Lightpens and 3d Imagers
for god knows how much!), someone felt it was worth 1000 bucks. To the
seller, nice job; to the purchaser, nice purchase.

To everyone else out there, think about this; the idea of collecting
should never be about dollars and cents, or profit and loss. Best place
to learn this is at Campus Comix in Carbondale Illinois, where the most
important lesson about antiques is taught: Whenever someone asks "What
would you recommend?", the reply is always, "Buy whatever You like", and
never think about the price. If you think it's worth it, chances are,
someone else does too.

Believe me, I would have originally thought this price outrageous and
unreasonable, and though I still feel it's outrageous, it's not nearly so
unreasonable anymore.
