EMULATORS (3)
Apple II
Since I was a commodore guy (did I say that before)? I was never really interested in
it. I had some friends who owned this computer though. And no one honest enough
will deny that this is the classic. Most of the classic games
were brought to us through this grand machine (Ultima, David's midnight magic, (nearly?) all Br0derbund classics...).
Steve Jobs/Wozniak did a great job inventing this one...
Since I don't know apples all that well (and there are many people who know apples very well), I won't go on
offending people, by saying semi smart things about it. Just reviewing the enormous quantity (and quality as well)
of emulators concerned with apples would fill a small book. I know the Commodore 64 quite well
and was interested in its emulation right from the beginning, I could say some smart (or not so smart) things about it.
One could most probably do the same with emulators of apples, I really would like to
write smart things about it too, but I just don't feel competend enough, so I'll just
give a list of what I've found, and where it can be found... .
As with the spectrum emulators I'll give voice to Paul, in his opinion there are some emulators
which are more equal than others (:-), no harm ment Paul).
(tramslated)
Apple II: here too it'd be better to put the only well functioning
DOS-emulator (ApplePC) first.
Concering the windows-emulators I would put the one of
Michael O'Brien in front, it is the second really good
emulator (it emulates not just the IIe, but the IIc too).
APPLE-EMULATORS
Have a look at the available FAQ's (URL below...), there are some (!!!) other
emulators available...
Linux
- Apple II+ Emulator for Linux version 0.02
written by Alexander Jean-Claude Bottema,
try to email him d91a1bo@meryl.csd.uu.se, this adress however may well be
out of date (according to the documentation)(I didn't try it).
The emulator uses the svgalib. It can be found at (for example)
tsx-11.mit.edu/pub/linux/sources/usr.bin
try a download via link...
apple2-v002.tar.gz.
It can also be found at
ftp://ftp.asimov.net/pub/apple_II/emulators/,
which is the same as

prodosemu.v0.1.tar.gz.
- YAE(Yet another Apple Emulator)
Author: ctkwan@cs.hku.hk.
This is an emulator for UNIX/Xwindow systems, the author claims to have had it running under Linux.
I didn't give it a try yet.
You can't get it (yet) at its hompage http://champion.cs.hku.hk:6502/,
the adress given there isn't relevant anymore either. However I found a copy of
and unkown emulator (there is no reverence to YAE, but it seems to be the same author) at
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub0/apple2/emulators/d_kwan.
(I also didn't test that one (yet))
- XApple2+
XApple2+, version 1.0. An Apple ][+ emulator for the X Window System
Written by Philip J. Stephens.
I didn't give it a try yet.
The only place I know of, where to get it is
ftp://joyce.eng.yale.edu/pub/appleIIgs/completed/, you can't (I can't!!!) get it using
netscape, one has to use 'real' ftp, due to the '+' in it's file name I guess.
Perhaps it is just my fault, so here is a direct link...:
- Apple II+ Simulator
Apple II+ Simulator Version 1.6p0 written by Peter Koch.
Following is an extract of the README file:
Welcome to the Apple II Simulator!
This program simulates an Apple II. Graphic (Hires and Lores) is
supported. A Disk II Controller and a Language Card simulation is
included. There also exists a generic slotcard simulation skeleton.
Needed equipment:

XGS
XGS: Apple IIGS Emulator for Unix/X Windows version 0.35 by
Joshua M. Thompson.
The author made a homepage for it, it's still pretty small
but it tells us what to expect.
A short note of the auhtor:
...
XGS is a program to emulate a ROM 03 Apple IIGS on a Unix system under
X Windows. This is an alpha version; many features are not implemented yet,
and many others don't work exactly like they should.

Just snoop around at the follwing sites, perhaps you'll find something interesting.
For more info's... just look at the link-pages of the homepages of some of the emulators, apple
fans tend to be an active lot, so you shouldn't have any problems getting what you want...

Atari 8bit
As with many other 8bit computers, this was not my computer. I was a c64 guy.
I don't even know how to test the emulators correctly, what is difficult to emulate, and what isn't.
I'll just give some information, which ones I've found... .
Emulators
There are four that I know of:
- XL-It (Linux (UNIX))
The author (Markus Gietzen, or Markus Gietzen) has a homepage
at http://www.htw.uni-sb.de/people/mgietzen.html. It is still in a somewhat early stadium, there are only binary releases as yet.
There is a page especially for the emulator XL-It at
http://www.htw.uni-sb.de/people/mgietzen/atari/xl-it.html.
It seems like the author abondened his linux efforts, since it is not even mentioned at his page
anymore. Try contact the author for more linux information. Have a look at the above page anyway, since
the DOS version is still in developement!
- Atari 800 (Linux (UNIX))
This emulator is written by
David Firth.
The official release site is at
ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/emulators/atari,
I don't know if the previous location is still valid, anyway, the author has a homepage for it now, have a look at it:
http://www.signus.demon.co.uk/david/atari/atari.html
or download via link:
I can't really say much about it, it works... .
- Rainbow (Windows 95/NT)
This emulator just recently had its first (or is it second?) birthday!
A Macintosh version exists for about one year now. It was very successfull.
The author did a Win95/NT port. It doesn't have sound yet, but looks really
promising to me! Atari 8bit'er supported:
Atari 400/800, 800XL, 130XE and 5200 machines
They all do work very well, though I deem it not to be the fastest emulator
on the marked. Have a look at it at its homepage:
http://www.cityscape.co.uk/users/jx91/emulators.html
Or try downloading a preview via link:
http://www.cityscape.co.uk/users/jx91/r95prev.zip
- XL-It (DOS)
The author (Markus Gietzen, or Markus Gietzen)
has a homepage
at
http://www.htw.uni-sb.de/people/mgietzen.html.
It is still in a somewhat early stadium, there are only binary releases as yet.
There is a page especially for the emulator
XL-It at
http://www.htw.uni-sb.de/people/mgietzen/atari/xl-it.html.
Try a download from here:
- Pokey (DOS)
Version 0.62 it supports Atari 8 bit computers/consoles like Atari 800, Atari XL or
Atari 5200 (roms required).
Can't really say all that much about it. It certainly works good, but as I mentioned befor
I never was an Atari guy...
I like some of the games though... like Frogger :-)
There is a homepage for it:
http://w3.one.net/~mhill/pokey/pokey.html.
Try a download from here:
- ACE (LINUX)
7
ACE: the Atari Computer Emulator (800/XL/XE)
Tried it, and it works, that's all I can say about it now.
The author of this emulator is Frank Barrus.
The newest version I know of is v0.02. More info and the emulator itself can be
got at Franks page: http://www.csh.rit.edu/~shaggy/software.html.
Try a download from here:
- PC Xformer (DOS, Windows)
There are several atari emulators available form
Branch Always Software, for atari 8bit
they've got a freeware version as well as commercial versions.
Of the comercial versions there are some newer demo versions available as well.
(I must admit I don't really check which versions are up to date, which are demos, which are
freeware...)
I think:
PC Xformer 2.50 is freeware.
PC Xformer 2.5? is comercial for DOS (but outdated).
PC Xformer 3.?? is comercial (plus demos) for DOS.
PC Xformer 4.?? is comercial (plus demos ?) for Windows (is it out yet?).
Following the adresses where you can get information...:
There you can also get an up to date demo version of the emulator,
or try it from here
xf33demo.zip (it goes to
http://www.halcyon.com/brasoft/freefile/xf33demo.zip)
- ATARI 800XL EMULATOR (DOS)
I don't know anything about this emulator. I got it of a FIDO BBS in Germany. The archive is called "800xl.zip",
no reference to the author can be found in the readme (which is written in German) file. The readme file tells us it's
freeware... .
In an errorlog file I found the following message:
ATARI 800XL EMULATOR Version 0.1ß, HANS S., TU Magdeburg
If anybody knows more about this one, I'd like to hear about it. If anybody wants to have a look at it,
contact me, I'll mail it to you, or give you an adress where it can be found.
The FIDO address I got it from: 2:2480/300 (GEWI Mailbox Germany: 08207-2073) Filename: 800XL.ARJ
- VSS (Virtual Super System)(DOS)
VSS is an Atari 5200 Super System emulator for MSDOS. The current version runs about 80% of the
ROM images I have almost flawlessly, and at a reasonable speed even on a 486DX2/66. On a Pentium
system the emulator gets close to, or better then full speed on a lot of games.
I got version 0.5. It runs some games (not all) and is not all that fast yet.
Look at the homepage for some further information:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/9461/emulate.htm
Or try a download via link:
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/9461/vss50.zip
Interested in some other stuff about Atari?
Than have a look at the following page:
And which has some emulators available and other information you may find usefull:
There is also an 8bit faq available, go to http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/atari-8-bit/faq/faq.html
to read it.
There is now a atari 8 but emulation homepage, have a look at it:
Software...
... can perhaps (and for example) be found at the following links:
There are also many interesting pages one may visit...
(atari 8bit users seem to be a active lot), try for example:
Some 'important' tools:
Yes, it requires two programs, Anadisk and Deana. Anadisk is a general
PC util that is supposed to be able to read any type of disk, and dump it
to a disk file. Deana will convert that file dump to either XFD or ATR
format. You can then use a program such as XFD-TOOLS or imagic
to extract files from the image.
Anadisk and Deana are both available from:
