EMULATORS (6)

Atari 16bit

I don't know much about this computer, since I allways was an amiga typ of guy, (at it's time there were all sorts of disputes going on, which of the two was the better computer - amiga of course :-)). Every amiga user was jealous of that black and white 70Hz monitor this computer had, I waited years for 'DUNGEON MASTER' to arrive... . But that's the past. PC's including Billy Boy have taken over, on Bernd's (
UAE) page even a link to the related
STONX
project (ST on X (Xwindows) that is) can be found.
They are emulating an atari st (Linux, XWindows). I think it quite impressing, they are doing a very good job. I did play a bit with it, got some software (shareware) tried it, ... and it worked (not fast, but well) (for example the screenshot of FROGGER (Frogger) was taken using that emulator). It all worked very nicely... .

Anyway, the homepage of stonx is at http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/nino/stemu.html.
There is another page related to it which is well done (probably are others still, that I don't know about) http://www.users.fast.net/~smol/stonx.html.
Ahh, if you want to download via link:

NEW!I got an email, telling me some other details about that emulator:
STonX is also a very well done emulator, and offers many of the features
of GEMulator. It's not as fast. (Runs full speed on a 486DX4-100).
It also has great sound support on some systems. STonX also supports
some TT and Falcon graphic modes, but no STe features yet.
Cons: Doesn't execute disk boot sectors, at least not yet. This
prevents many games from being loaded. Also no joystick support yet.

Some Info
There is(are) yet another (two!) emulator(s) brewing. No versions available yet, but perhaps you can get enough info from the follwing two pages...

MagiC
And another! I didn't try this one yet, I can only say what I heard (read) in some newsgroups threads, so don't beat me up if I get something wrong, just correct me! This emulator is available as a demo version. Very restricted as far as I was able to get it. The full version is quite expensive (the ever open question about an emulator being at least as expensive as the real thing...). I think this emulator is not a Computer emulation but a ROM (TOS that is) emulator. The 'correctly' written software is supposed to work quite well. Anyway, for more information you had better look at its homepage:
http://members.aol.com/ashinfo/index.html
And/or try a download via link:
ftp://members.aol.com/ashftp/demomapc.exe.

TOS 2 WIN
This emulator is available as a demo version. Very restricted as far as I was able to get it. The full version is quite expensive (the ever open question about an emulator being at least as expensive as the real thing...). I think this emulator is not a Computer emulation but a ROM (TOS that is) emulator. The 'correctly' written software is supposed to work quite well. There is no ST environment, this software is supposed to get TOS programs to work under windows... .
Now I tried some programs. Frogger for one is not working, but I didn't really expect it, since it is an OS emulator rather than a hardware emulator. I tried some TOS/GEM programs and the ones I tried worked rather well and speed certainly was OK too. I didn't try anything exotic though, some shareware programs I found in some mailbox. Amongst others a picture conversion program. The pictures (different resolutions) very displayed correctly. Though some windows boarders were not deleted after closeing. All in all it looked rather well done. But the price will never incourage me to buy this one...
If you want to try the demo version be sure to use WINZIP, since it contains long directory names, which my current DOS version didn't handle correctly (no error/warning message), and the setup program kept telling me some configuration file was missing...
Anyway, for more information you had better look at its homepage:
http://www.aixit.com
And/or try a download via link:
http://members.aol.com/aixit/t2w.zip.

Oh, I nearly forgot, there is of course another emulator available, but since I haven't got it no testing is being done...
But I know where you can get some information about it. It is called GEMulator, since the ROM's (TOS's that is) are still copyright by ATARI, this emulator comes with some hardware interface on which the original ROM's are atached. The emulator itself doesn't need any hardware though.
NEW
They released a new version for Laptops, which doesn't need hardware anymore, it's supposed to work on all computers though
For the address see below...

Gemulator 96 (demo)
This is the newest version of GEMulator. One can download a demo version of that emulator at their new WEB site:
http://www.emulators.com/
This emulator apears to be quite good. With the below mentioned 'trick' the demo version works like a beauty, so far no program didn't work (though I haven't tried that many). I didn't really figure out how a joystick works (perhaps it is not enabled in the demo version), but appart from that even Frogger worked :-)
Try a download via link:
http://www.emulators.com/gem96dem.zip.

An interesting message I got regarding the above demo...:
I just grabbed the demo version of Gemulator 96 from www.emulators.com
and it is indeed cool. It works great so far!

Anyway, not having the TOS ROM card but having a few STs and having used
STonX, I decided to try booting Gemulator from my own ROM image. I made
a TOS image for STonX with the TOSDUMP program from
http://www.users.fast.net/~smol/stonx.html and renamed it "magic_pc.os"
and placed it in my root directory and Gemulator WORKED!

So, if you want to use Gemulator, just make a TOS dump, call it
"magic_pc.os", and stick it in your c:\ directory!

What fun!

Stephen

I found some software for it at ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/atari/games (if you get through).

And there is a FAQ available as well at http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/hypertext/faq/usenet/csas-faq/.
Which consists of actually three faqs:
The relevant newsgroup: news:comp.sys.atari.st

Altair/Imsai

Have a look at my
other page for some information about what these historic beasts are! I certainly never saw one in real life. I don't claim to know how to use the emulators, since no instruction is given. Their seem to work alright though, they actually look quite nice. If you are a collector (like me) or have some historical background have a look at them. There is a (small) homepage for them:
Try a download via link:
(that's a very small ZIP'ed file (>30KB), there is some sort of decrunch error, but don't be concerned, the emulators are working alright (or so it seems)).

SAM Coupe

XCOUPE v0.7alpha by
Allan Skillman. Finally I got around to have a look at this one. I ment to try it for quite some time now, but since Linux is not very well available to me at the moment,... I had some difficulties to do so. Well, what to say, I never was a Sinclair guy (did I mention that before?), this emulator certainly works, but can't really test it very well, since I'm not at all experience dealing with it. For people who haven't got the SAM coupe ROMS... you can run the emulator with Spectrum ROMS as well (but it will work as a spectrum(surprise surpirse!!!)). The ROMS are not included, so you might find it even harder to use it. It's always a pitty that some legal mumbo prevents the authors from releasing their emulators with ROMS. In some cases it is very understandable, in others - NOT. Anyway, he has a very well maintained WEB-page about SAM coupe stuff, have a look at it at:

The emulator page (XCOUPE):

He mentiones at his page a ftp site, I haven't been able to log on as yet, but have a try yourself:

Colour Genie

At least I heard about this computer befor. Actually there is no emulator available as yet, this entry might have gone to the rumors section as well. All I can report about is that there is a homepage available with some info about it and talk about emulation. It sounds like there might be a public version available one day... . Have a look at it for your own...

There is now a beta version available at the above page (very beta), no graphic modes are supported for one thing...

KC 85/3

This is what I wrote in the rumors section:
I never heard of this one, Paul told me about it in an email...
Email... (translated)
..Well I looked at two of pearls Agency's catalogs (it's a german computer/software company), ..I didn't find it...
Actually I don't know much more now. But I've got a working copy. That's about all, I don't know where to get it and I don't know if it is commercial or not. I have a couple of small programs for it as well, so I know it works... that's all!

Sega Master System

For quite some time now discussion has been going on in the newsgroups about a Sega Masters emulator. It seems that some people decided to stop discussion and trying to emulate it. Two or three people have actually announced that they might start/be at work. A newsgroups announcement from David S.:
Thema: Re: Anyone working on a Sega Master System Emulator out there? Von: Dave S. Datum: Fri, 26 Jul 96 18:29:36 GMT In a fit of impulse buying, I got myself a Master System and 3 games today. I guess this means you can put me down as 'officially' working on an emulator. Judging by the state of R-Type, I'm not really sure it's worth the effort. :) -- Dave And another from Duncan:
The next one is more than just a rumor. It is a new nearly perfectly working emulator (including sound). I really like that one, it plays many games. It emulates, Sega Master System as well as Game Gear. I never had one of the just mentioned machines, for a long time I wasn't into video games. But many titles are really worth a look, even for todays standards. Have a look for example at MAPPY, which really is quite a well done arcade port (if you like the game, that is). Have a look at the homepage at:
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~dmckay/x128.html
The newest known version is v0.5, you can try a download at the above page or via link from here:
http://www.users.dircon.co.uk/~dmckay/masage05.zip

MegaGear Another Marat Fayzullin emulator. As usual it is not quite as fast as it's counterparts but emulation really works. Some of it even better as the above. As usual Marat did the portable emulator under UNIX and people pick up his work to release ports to other systems. (what did people complain about writing emulators in 'C'? How many ports of Marats emulators do you guys think would be available? DOS, WINDOWS, MAC, UNIX's, BEEP, OS/2, NEXT???) Since the last update of my pages, this emulator not only appeared, it raced thru some version numbers, similar to the above one. And is now available as version 0.8, which also has for example sound support! And does play even more games correctly than massage, but alas, not as fast :-).

Sega Genesis

GenEm
The homepage tells us, it will be sort of a commercial product, well let's see. I'm allways a bit dubious about console emulators which are commercial.
The one I know of is developed by
Markus Gietzen. He also programmed the Atari XLit emulator. Have a look at its homepage for news on its developement:
There is now a first beta version publically available. (non publically further beta versions are out... but one can't put ones fingers on them :-)!
Anyway... the first beta version really looks promising, as it DOES work with quite a lot of games...:

Bluezone
There is another one in developement called Blue Zone. So far no version can be found. There even are rumors that this one is fake. As no working copy is available yet nothing can be said for sure. My personal believe is that a release will be available in a short time and that this one is no fake. For more information look at the homepage of it:

MegaDrive Emulator v0.5
There is no homepage for this one, it doesn't very much at this state. Developement even seems to be ceasing...
If an emulator is written by guys in some certain IRC channel it usually is titeled as 'having high potential' at some certain pages. One might translate that to: being in developement for ages and nothing ever comes out of it. Uugh, I guess that was kind of rude, sorry folks...
Have a look at it at AvatarZ page (http://www.nfinity.com/~swhalen/node99/index.html which is quite good!) or try a download via link:

P2000

I again can't remember having heard of that computer. The emulator I've got is written by
Marcel de Kogel. He is sort of famous for his DOS ports (and add ons) of Marats emulators. This version is for DOS only! This is (as far as I know) his first 'own' emulator. It looks upon startup 'Maratish' (Marat, nice adjectiv :-)). The CPU emulation is based on Marats Z80 code.
The emulator has reached version number v0.41 at this point. It includes for example sound (not naturally available at that stage of emulation (concerning version number (in relation to some other emulators))). As I said I never heard of it befor. The ROM and programs which are available for it are mostly in Dutch (Marcel, has that something to do with your origin?). I tested it somewhat and it seems to be working fine. So far so good, for more information look at its homepage: Or try a download via link:

TI 85

There are a couple of TI Calculator fans out there in the wide world. I have seen only one emulator so far. Are there any else? I found one for the TI 85 calculator. So I only can say that such emulator exists. It is again based on Marats Z80 Emulation code. Have a look at the Page for it at:
or try a download via link:

There is a WEB-page for TI Calculators in general, have a look at it, if you are interested:

EDSAC

Well, are there any people out there who have actually seen this one? I dare say I really doubt it. For some time there has been an emulator for the Macintosh been out. Now (or nearly now) is a version for windows being born. It is not publically available yet, but mysteriously I got a working beta version installed at my computer. It runs like a beauty. There are many sample programs for it provided and a very good documentation. If there are any fans of old really historical computer out there, this one is going to be a must.

Till it will be available publically I'll just provide a link to it's programmers homepage (which has a link to the Mac version, but not Windows as yet).

Commodore VIC 20

Recently there evolved two new VC20 emulators. Appart from the one that comes with the
VICE
-VICE-, which is no perfect emulation yet (well what is perfect), since no grafical video modes are supported.

VIC 20
The second comes from Paul Robson again. Which astonishes with very compact emulators which are written in assembler, free and mostly very good. This emulator comes as a zipped file which has a size of about 7Kb. I don't know if tapes or the likes are suppported yet. But many cartridge work just fine with it (without sound yet). He didn't make a homepage for it as yet but that may come in time...
You can get it via link from his place though:

VIC 20
The third one is quite a bit slower than Pauls emulator, since it is written in some high level language. I didn't figure out how to start Pauls emulator with different RAM-expansion-configurations or how to load a BASIC program. This emulator has some (hard to reach) debugging options which can be used to enable disable certain RAM expansion. Further more one can also load BASIC programs (which again I didn't figure out with Pauls). BUT the emulator is by far not as stable as the above mentioned. I had some difficulties to get it to work anything at all. Have a look at its homepage:
http://shell.ihug.co.nz/~be/vic.htm
Or try a download via link from here:
http://shell.ihug.co.nz/~be/v20dos.zip
There is a newer version available as well:
